In the morning, Mr. A from Hikone brought branches so big that they were covering his body. He said, "here are Hibiscus syriacus for you. I brought these this year, too." They are a special species of Hibiscus called Ryohtanji Mukuge which are colored pure white and have open flowers which are very flat compared to the other one's trumpet shape. Indeed I received these branches last year and wrote about them on my bolg (2020.7.3 blog). According to him. the timing of opening is earlier than last year. I just worried if the original tree was ok by cutting these big branches. I could see many buds on the branches.

Last Sunday, I received many kinds of hydrangea from Ms.T living in a nearby town. I feel very good surrounded by those various kinds of flowers. In the afternoon, I also received plums from Mr. W. They were small but they were sooo sweet! I have never eaten such sweet plums. My house is full of many items that I have received. I am thankful for people's warm and kind gifts.

After it had rained all day long, we had a morning where the earth and roofs looked so heavy, absorbing yesterday's rain. When I visited Taga taisha after seven a.m., I didn't see anyone in the shrine's area, so I worshipped with no rush and went into the woods. I guess people from the shrine cleaned both the shrine and woods early in the morning, so everywhere was so clean.

I finished the second vaccine for coronavirus. People said that after the second one is over, many people have fever, so I was expecting that I might be one of them. As a result, I had the same muscle pain on my left arm as I did at the first vaccine, but I didn't suffer any other side reaction and I am thankful for that.

The sky when I looked up during the walk was so interesting. I could see the sun in the east sky and scattered unmoving clouds were under it, then black rainy clouds below the scattered clouds were moving fast from east to south. According to the weather info. today is fine, so these black clouds need to give space to the fine clouds quickly. To me they looked like they were saying " Stage change! Hurry up, hurry!". It was a funny phenomenon.

The owner of the house next door changed and it is in the middle of remodelling as a Japanese style restaurant now. Spacious backyard became a very flat area and I am curious how it will be used. Only one thing I feel very sorry about is that there were a couple of trees between my next door neighbor and my land and all of these trees were cut and none of them are left. One of the trees which I feel extremely sorry for was a pomegranate. Every year in this season it has vermilion flowers in the fresh green and I enjoy looking at them very much. I was so disappointed about the cutting and talked about it to the cafe's customer. The other day, she brought the branches of a pomegranate which is in her yard. When I received the branches, I found many thorns. I was enjoying the flowers from my back yard but never touched it.
When I visited my neighbour to collect some money, beautiful pink flowers were in the vase, I said "Wow! what pretty flowers they are!" The lady said " They were from the backyard. You can bring some." and she handed cesauses to me. I am so lucky to appreciate those beautiful fresh flowers in my cafe. The pink one is a kind of hydrangea but it has very different flowers from those I usually see as a regular hydrangea. I also enjoyed the fragrance of lilies in the next Japanese room. It is the rainy season in Japan now, but I am fascinated by those beautiful flowers.

I received Kon-nyaku (scientific name:Amorphophallus konjac, commonly known as devils tongue in Eng.) from Ms.Y as a souvenir from Kohyasan in Wakayama prefecture. Ms.Y said that I should try to make Kon-nyaku-zushi which is a Buddhist cuisine. Since she gave the recipe to me,
I tried to make kon-nyaku-zushi. Inari-zushi is a fried bean curd stuffed with vinegared rice and I am serving it at my cafe but I make special vinegared rice mixed with minced lotus root, carrot and sesame seed. This time I made half regular inari-zushi and half kon-nyaku-zushi which was wrapped rice with simmered kon-nyaku instead of bean curd. It is very good! The texture of kon-nyaku and vinegared rice matched well. I am glad that I got a new recipe for kon-nyaku.

I went to the concert of Toshiharu Nakajima and Kensaku Tanikawa entitled "Sing about family" at Hikone City Cultural Plaza. Toshiharu Nakajima is a countertenor opera singer from Hikone and Kensaku Tanikawa is a pianist and composer. Most of the songs were by poet, Shuntaro Tanikawa and composed by Kensaku who is the son of Shuntato Tanikawa and they were played by Kensaku's piano and sung by Toshiharu Nakajima. Kensaku played piano as he spoke and Nakajima sang the poems with a clear and expressive voice. It was a beautiful world of poems collaborated by those two artists who both have great sensitivity. They also read many poems between the songs which were so impressive. There were many children's poems and poems by Japanese poets Shuntaro Tanikawa, Jyukichi Yagi, Kiichi Takai and Konosuke Fujikawa. Children's poems were fresh and lively. Shuntaro's "Young man who is looking down" was familiar to me, and Yagi's ”Thinking of mother" was impressive. The former was a poem about a father who lost his little boy and the latter poem was about a father's deep consideration toward his mother who is suffering from dementia. All these poems were amazing. I liked the reading of children's poems by Kansaku and I was moved by Fujikawa's last poem read by Nakajima. It was a wonderful concert and all my stress and fatigue were washed away.

It was a cleaning day of the stream which runs beside Taga Taisha. Seven people including me from my neighborhood, putting long shoes on and carrying rakes, went down to the stream on the right of the main gate of the shrine to clean the downstream. Around the area of the arched stone bridge, the water was clean with no mud because people from the shrine were cleaning everyday. It is a privilege for us who are living in the neighborhood of the shrine to go under the bridges in order to clean the stream. When I lowered my head and went through the stream which has shallow water, I was excited.

After the work was over, I rushed to my home and continued my work, which is preparation for making IZANAMI Lunch. The menus were the following: vinegared seaweed and cucumber, tomato salad, chichen and orange dressed with sauce, spinach and bacon with sauce, burdock roots and carrot cooked in soy sauce and sugar, stewed hamburger, carrot and potato glacé and clear Japanese soup. We very much appreciated both customers who had lunch at the cafe and those who requested take away for home.

I chose poems for the morning storytelling for third graders at the elementary school. As a matter of fact, I was not able to decide whether I should choose a picture book or short poems for children. The reason I was indecisive was that in general picture books are good for the lower grades so they can enjoy both story and pictures and I couldn't predict their reaction if I read poems instead. At the very last minute, however, I chose books of poems. About a hundred twenty poems are in these two books which were selected by Mitsuko Hase who was a poem reader and performer and I had a good relationship with while she was alive. Although I had hesitation about reading those poems because Ms. Hase was a great reader and my level of reading is much lower than her level, I wanted to challenge myself because there are many wonderful poems by great Japanese poets and I believed kids must enjoy them very much. As a result, the kids reacted very well! While I was reading, some kids were laughing and some kids were smiling. When I finished reading, I asked them which one was interesting. They said their memorable words one after another among the poems which I read. It was a great feeling to know that reading poems aloud stimulates children. It is just as Ms Hase was saying.

Walking was my daily routine before my cafe opened and then it became my routine for Mondays and Thursdays which were regular closing days of the cafe since the cafe started. Recently I haven't gone for walking as much as before because I go to Hikone to get food by bicycle both for the cafe and myself and it is an exercise instead of walking. Fortunately, daylight hours are longer these days. Today, I decided to go for a walk before dinner. On my route, a woman who was outside her house said to me " Oh, you are walking (instead of riding a bicycle) today". I thought that I should walk more because I gave an impression to her that I am always riding a bike. While I was walking, I could hear frogs croaking here and there from rice paddies where rice planting was already over. I was wondering what kind of frogs they were and why they were croaking. Hearing these sounds of nature's living things, I enjoyed the time and relaxed. What a beautiful twilight sky in the west! It was a moment on the last day of May.
