Today, it was a nice and calm day. Kaze no Kooboo exhibition and sale was finished after four open days. Guests came one after another to Taga Asahiya where the exhibition for the first day was held. They looked around Kooji Noda's beautiful works and many people bought the one they preferred. After that many of them also took time for coffee at the cafe which kept me happily busy. Some said that Kooji's modern and sophisticated colors in his dyed work suited my old Japanese house very much. I am so grateful to hear that. Ms. S.K brought Fukujyusoo (pheasant's eye) from her home. You will find it outside the front door. My happiness from the successful event is doubled by seeing this tiny cute flower. It signifies the coming of bright spring at the cafe "Taga Asahiya".

Beginning tomorrow (Feb. 22) Kaze no kooboo exhibition and sale will take place at my cafe Taga Asahiya. Kooji and Kooko Noda came to the cafe to exhibit their art work nicely in the storehouse, guest room, living room, alcove and hallway areas. Mr. Noda's dyed clothes which are adventurous in their design, yet quiet in their color scheme match well with the Japanese Tatami room and store house. I hope many people will come to see their work at the cafe.

Today, a group of "Hikone ghost tour" visited Taga Shrine as one of the spots of "Senjikidai" which is a sacred table where a sacred crow stops. According to the brochure of the tour, if the crow which is usually a common one comes to the table and tries to eat the offering rice for the God during a Shinto ritual, it turns into a special crow called Senjiki-garasu as a prophet to lead fortune. After Taga Shrine, the group came to the cafe to eat their lunch. This was the first time for me to serve lunch for guests at my cafe. Then they listened to professional storytelling of traditional Japanese tales by Mr. Kyokudoo Nankai.

It occasionally snows these days. Yesterday Mr. Shuusei Yamada <http://biodieseladventure.com/japanese/index.html>whom Ms. Nobuko Nakagawa introduced to me visited my home and we had dinner together with some other members. We were able to hear about his amazing experiences. Before his arrival, I could not envisage him even though Ms. Nakagawa talked to me about what he had done. He impressed me with his very friendly demeanor, his world-view, the diversity of the people who he has communicated with, the vehicle, boat, horse, dog sled and other materials which he self-learned to masterfully maneuver in his work. Through his talk, I knew that he is a person who has deep knowledge, profound insight and a keen sense of judgment. Probably because of these, he is gentle and has much room in his heart.

The heart's red color is a symbol of love which produces a gorgeous and pleasant atmosphere. I also enjoyed this special day with my guests in the cafe.

One of my friends in Tokyo sent information about the calligraphy of the old scroll in the alcove. She sent a link to a website for me, which is from her friend who has knowledge about that kind of calligraphy. According to the information, the calligraphy is a Chinese poem by Wang Wei (701-761). I still don't know who wrote the calligraphy though. Then I asked for help to get the English translation of the poem to my friend, Chinese Professor R.L of Wellesley College. She found two versions of English translations and kindly sent them to me. The information is as follows. I hope you will enjoy this romantic poem.

You came from our hometown,

Should know things over there.

By the window the day you left,

In bloom were the winter plums?

You have just come, my friend, from home town;

You should have known what’d happened right there down.

By my silk windows, when you were to come,

Had winter-plum there already bloomed some?

We practiced making miso at my cafe this Thursday. The ingredients are koji (malted rice)2kg, soybeans 1.5Kg, salt 800g and sake lees. (1) Boil soybeans until you can break it up easily with fingers. (2) Drain the hot water in a colander. (3) Crash soy beans well.(4) Put salted rice malt in and mix it well. (5) Make balls with both hands and throw them into the miso pot which was washed by the broth left over after boiling soybeans. You need to beat the soybean balls hard so no air is inside. We started at 9 am and finished at 11 am. Ms. Nishizawa prepared boiled soybeans for the members and brought the necessary tools to the cafe. Ms. Ohmachi explained the way and showed how to make miso to us. According to them, it will take 8 months to eat it as tasty miso. After the work, we had a happy coffee time and chat together. I also served lunch for them. It was a pleasant morning.

The first day of the spring (Risshun) in the calendar has passed, however we still have severe cold days such as below the freezing point in the morning and chilly wind. In those days, the hours of sunshine has been longer little by little which makes me relieved. Since it turned to February, I changed the arrangement of the alcove. I hung the old scroll which I like but unfortunately I have no idea what it says. I am ashamed at myself. I wish someone who can read this old Japanese could let me know about it.
