I met my friends at a mall in a suburb, and went into a new supermarket together which was very big with two stories inside of a shopping center. I was surprised by the huge space and large stock of goods. You can find foodstuff used in Japanese cooking, prepared sushi for taking out, salad bar, food court where you can have a variety of ethnic dishes, and a restaurant. In the supermarket, I was interested in an escalator for carts which ran parallel with a regular escalator for people. It is very convenient because you can find almost everything you want, but there are times when it is inconvenient to shop in such a supermarket. After our lunch meeting, I wanted to buy foodstuff for the dinner and tried to find a pack of dumpling skins. Since I couldn't find it by myself, I asked a shop person. She searched it with her smart phone and took me there. It was far to get there even though it was still inside the shop. I think it is too big to find two-dollar dumpling skins.

As I was driving in a Boston suburb, I noticed that autumn foliage has begun. The temperature has rapidly dropped recently and the word "cold!" slips out of my mouth. This year I believe it will be a beautiful New England autumn. I also feel that the summer has gone by, as I have noticed the change of fruits and vegetables at the market and the outfits of people around me.

Let me talk about the second movie which we watched the other day. Actually it consisted of two parts directed by Claude Berri (1986). Part 1 is "Jean de Frolette" and Part 2 is " Manon des Sources". It is very long to watch, and lasts about four hours but I was very impressed by this movie. I was fascinated by the first scene of the natural landscape in France where it is the mountain side rather than plain region and it went along with beautiful quiet music. 90% people on the screen were male. Jean's wife and his daughter appeared with almost no lines but they did a good job and impressed me very much. In the second part, The story focused on this daughter, Manon who grew up. At the end we discovered the relationship of the people which was surprising. Yves Montand's acting was deep and superb. Emmanuelle Beart was so beautiful. The "water" is key in this film and we knew how severe a farmer's life is, as it depends on the water.

It has been half a year since the last time I came to Boston. Yesterday, we borrowed two DVDs at the library nearby. One is "Boyhood" (2014) directed by Richard Linklater and the other one is "Jean de Florette" (1986) directed by Claude Berri. Although I hadn't recovered from the jetlag yet and I was so tired, we watched "Boyhood" first anyhow. It was filmed with the same cast over the course of 12 years. It focused on a boy who has an older sister and is raised by his mother who divorced and remarried and her kids were forced to cope with these different situations. I thought that it seems realistic in the US. Sometimes adults' behavior is unreasonable through the point of view of the kids and it hurts them deeply. It was so heartbreaking to me. Since they speak slang and I couldn't catch up with the subtitles because they changed so fast, I was frustrated all the time, but still I thought it was a good movie it left something in my heart.

People in the cafe are all talking about how strong the typhoon #21 was. Big trees have fallen in the storm, window glasses were broken, plastic greenhouses were blown by the wind, etc. I remembered that there was an Argiope spider with his web in my garden just before the typhoon and I went to see what had happened to it after the storm yesterday. Surprisingly it was still there with the web! The right stabilimentum disappeared after the storm, but I was amazed by the strength of the spider silk. This morning I could see the right stabilimentum again which he made overnight. The spider is really big which makes me scared. It stays in the center of the web which is about one meter in diameter. The spider and his web were shaking while I was taking photos. Looking at this scene, I wonder whether human being is strong or weak compared to this spider.

I had been checking the weather information everyday since a couple of days ago but this Sunday's weather always indicated a rainy day by an umbrella mark or a cloud with rain drops. The morning of Sunday (today), however, it was not raining and even better, the sun came up! It's the day of the annual fall festival at Taga Taisha and everybody wanted it to be a clear day. After the morning, although it didn't become sunny, it didn't rain either which was fortunate for the people who walked in the procession of the festival. The procession was shorter and with fewer horses compared to the spring festival but I could see many familiar faces in the line and when they saw me, they gave me a smile. It has been almost three years since I came back to Taga and I appreciate the number of the people whom I have gotten acquainted with in town.

Typhoon No.21 was extremely strong which made me fearful, but fortunately it passed without any damage in my house. And yet it was very lucky that the day of the Marimba Concert was just before this big typhoon. This year Mr. Fumito Nunoya came to Taga Asahiya again with a big instrument, his marimba. Last year we had almost 90 people in the audience for the concert and I felt bad because they felt cramped in a confined space. Mr. Nunoya kindly offered two concerts in a day this time so the audience could feel more relaxed. 70 people came to each concert and both of them ended extremely successfully. This time many people who are learning marimba came to the concert which was different from last year. I guess it is evidence that recognition of the internationally known Mr. Nunoya is rising in Japan, too. Many members of the audience were saying that it was very fortunate to see his playing from a very short distance and to be able to hear him talk during the concert, which is something that occurs rarely at his regular performances in big music halls. Whether it was for the second or the first time coming to his concert here at the café, the audience must have all experienced a wonderful moment. His incredible movement of the mallets which I could hardly believe is humanly possible, jaunty rhythms, vibrant and lively feeling and the pianissimo which is like a soft cotton but deep and sensitive -- all of these are aspects of Mr. Nunoya's world of expression and his musical existence, encompassing his philosophy. I am very impressed by his playing. I wonder how he is going to develop further? There might be an answer in his daily practice, his polished sensibility and his sincerity toward the music.
