After eating my dinner a little early, I went out for a walk to burn calories. It was twilight when I was back home. Since the evening sky was so beautiful, I was amazed and stopped walking to look at the setting sun. It was a busy day of preparing box lunches, packs of Inari-zushi (vinegared rice wrapped in deep-fried bean curd) and Mochiko-cake for delivery and take-out. I appreciate the project "Tomoe-chan delivery service" which Ms. Yamane planned to support the shops like my cafe which ought to close and stop business due to the coronavirus. This project is very helpful. I of course thank customers who make phone calls to us to request their food.

I have been hearing mostly about coronavirus these days, but I received wonderful news from my family member. H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV) named Kounotori #9 which was launched from Tanegashima Space Center in Japan on May 21st arrived at the International Space Station (ISS) on May 26th. ISS is a manned space station which is a multi-national collaborative project among five participating agencies : NASA (USA), Roscosmos (Russia), JAXA( Japan),ESA (Europe), and CSA (Canada). Kounotori means "stork" in Japanese and it had a mission to transport supplies such as food, equipment for experiments and other provisions to the ISS. After launching successfully Kounotori approached the ISS to a proximity of 10 meters and then one of ISS's crew members operated the station's robotic arm to capture Kounotori. It looks that Kounotori stays in the space, but in fact both ISS and Kounotori are flying at an altitude of about 400 km above the Earth with a speed of 7.8 km/seconds (it orbits the earth 16 times a day). On the livestream, I watched the robotic arm reaching for Kounotori as well as both NASA and JAXA operating rooms. Now we have a chaotic situation due to coronavirus on Earth, but on the other hand there was an incredible joining together in space. Both are really happening now.

We had an online juggling lesson for beginners by clown duo, Rone & Gigi a couple days ago, so I thought I would like to practice juggling. However, there weren't any appropriate balls in my house. I took snacks wrapped with plastic and tried to toss but everytime I failed to catch them and it didn't work well. Then I decided to make bean bags by myself with pieces of cloth. I know that many people make hand-made masks for protection from coronavirus these days, but I made hand made bean bags instead. Since I didn't know how to make bean bags, I learned it from YouTube. I made bean bags in three colors. Now it is time for me to challenge juggling. Well, I hope I can do it.

Red nose clown duo, Rone & Gigi whom we are expecting to perform at Taga Asahiya again this November following last year, are struggling now because all of their stage performances and events have been canceled due to the coronavirus. Nevertheless, they have kept sharing their thoughts, funny ideas, basic clown method, and past stage performances online. Today I would like to introduce their "Juggling lesson for beginners" which they opened to the public. I hope you will enjoy and have a go at juggling. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbN9gBGrL1g&feature=emb_share&fbclid=IwAR0_7mJTzOdrocoLUZcjB_EfzWWPh_WXcxVjLN42jmf8mUahqZ4Pbo2G6I4

Y. Fujiseki who is the director of a clinic in Takamiya and my high school classmate, has profound knowledge of Japanese classical stage such as Kabuki, Joruri, Rakugo (traditional comic storytelling) and Koodan (traditional Japanese tales), etc. as well as painting, wood print and Netsuke (miniature carving attached to the end of a cord hanging from a pouch). I learn the beauty of those arts which were created with the aid of Japan's natural features from him. He also has been keeping Japanese honeybees for many years for their honey so he knows details about bees but he keeps warm feelings towards all of the native creatures which coexist with us. Well, today I would like to introduce that UKIYO-E (Japanese traditional painting) exhibition collected by Dr. Fujiseki is helding at Takamiya station. The first one he exhibited is ”Takamiya ーThe 69 Stations of Kiso Road " (actually the Sixty-nine stations of Nakasendo Road) by the third Toyokuni Utagawa. Because of security reasons, we can only appreciate a photo of the original. The painter drew Sasaki Gentazaemon who was a samurai in Taga and appeared in the story of "Uguisu-zuka" in Kabuki theatre. Dr. Fujiseki gave a detailed explanation about the Kabuki actor who was popular at that time and played the role of this samurai. I was curious to learn more about the backstory of the drawing which Dr. Fujiseki wondered as well. I researched the relationship of the person and my area by web at home and found out that Sasaki Gentazaemon was a member of the Sasaki family who had been guarding Ohmi and placed as a chief priest of Konomiya Shrine. Therefore, Konomiya Shrine and the sacred mountain were drawn behind the person.

It was cloudy in the morning but gradually it became a beautiful day in May. These days I usually stay at home alone except for taking a walk. In order to vary your simple life, I think you need to come up with good ideas by yourself. I put away the Boys' May Festival dolls and changed the hanging scroll, which worked. I felt refreshed. The flowers from Mrs. S.Y make the quiet house brilliant. I am not sure whether the name of the blue flower is iris or calamus, but I am glad to notice they are the same flowers on the fan used for Japanese dance in the alcove. Since yesterday was Mother's Day, I decided to make Chirashi-zushi (a type of sushi) which was the favorite dish of my mother, who passed away a long time ago. If you go to a sushi restaurant and ask for Chirashi-zushi in the Tokyo area, you will be served a dish which consists of different kinds of seafood on top of vinegar rice. But in my area (Kansai) we mix many ingredients ( mainly seasoned vegetables) in the vinegar rice. We call it Chrashi-zushi or Bara-zushi (scattered sushi). In the afternoon my friend stopped by my house, so I put some in a container and gave it to her for her supper.

Recently I have been taking a walk for an hour crossing over Serigawa (river) which is slightly longer than the course I took before. The destination of my walk is KIMAGURE-ICHI (lit. whim market) which is run by Ms. N in Kiso village. She used to sell vegetables from farmers nearby but ever since her illness last year, she shrunk her market and has been selling limited numbers of vegetables. Nevertheless, I appreciate that she is continuing her Kimagure-ichi. Usually nobody is in the Kimagure-ichi and the vending machine for vegetables is placed there instead. These days, we can find local strawberries in the machine. Putting some coins into the vending machine and pushing the button, I take out the strawberries. I feel so good and it is fun to eat strawberries while walking back home. There are wheat fields near the rice paddies. Contrasting with the fully ripe rice plants whose heads droop, wheat grows straight up toward the sky. I wish to take to heart the precious things nature may be telling us.

It's sweaty weather these two days. Please excuse the fact that I wrote this two days ago and it is not timely. I hesitated walking because of a problem with my left leg (having said that it was actually just my laziness), I thought I needed exercise, so I went out for a walk after a long time. Oh, I felt so good! It is a limited season that I can see the reflection of the outline of the mountains which surround the Taga area on the surface of the rice paddies filled with water for rice-planting. There was a paddy field in the middle of planting. I saw a rice-planting machine working in a paddy field carrying compacted young plants. It was an amazing movement of planting. There is a big difference between planting by hand and by machine in terms of efficiency. The stream for irrigation was plentiful and running fast quietly. I could hear only the birds singing. Everything was peaceful if we didn't think about Coronavirus. When I got back to Taga shrine, the fresh green leaves of Japanese maple tree were spreading over my head.
