　以前ほどの活気は見られませんが、夏の間は毎週木曜日午後に地域の農家が野菜や蜂蜜、ペイストリーなどを出す市が街の中心の駐車場で開かれています。先週覗いてみてブルーベリーがとても甘くてに美味しかったので、今週も行ってみました。お店の他に、今日は高年層のグループ１５人ほどがバンジョーなどの楽器や歌で楽しそうに披露して場を盛り上げていました。値段はスーパーよりちょっと高めでしたが、まあ地元の農家の応援も入っているので仕方ないと思いました。

    それにしても今日は湿気もあって強い日差し。歩くと汗が出てきます。家のそばの池から上がってくるガチョウ？の群れが呑気にその辺を闊歩しています。

    Farmers Market has been held every Thursday afternoon at the parking lot of Belmont Center during the summer which seems smaller compared to the one before. They are selling vegetables, honey, pastries, and so on. I went there last Thursday and bought some blueberries. Since they were so sweet, I went there again to get it. This time a senior group was playing light music and singing pleasantly, it made the atmosphere joyful. The prices were all a little higher than regular supermarkets, but I thought in terms of supporting local farms, it might be understandable.

    Well, it was a really humid and hot day with direct sun on us. I sweat a lot while I was walking. A flock of geese which were from the pond were walking carelessly on the road and sidewalk.

    郊外に住む友人に会うためにボストン最大の鉄道駅のSouth Stationから近郊列車（commuter rail)に乗りました。South Stationは全米を結んでいるアムトラック（Amtrak）の発着駅でもありますが、MBTAと呼ばれるマサチューセッツ州の公共交通機関の駅でもあります。Tと呼ばれる全米最初の地下鉄や近郊列車、路線バスも発車しています。この日私はレンタカーの利用も考えましたが、郊外に行って帰るだけなので近郊列車を利用することにしました。

    大きな駅の構内はスーツケースを引いている人もたくさんいて、ニューヨークやワシントンDC方面へ行く人と思われました。フードコートもあり映画に出てくる駅らしく活気に満ちていました。Amtrackと近郊列車の切符売り場は並んでいて、目的地までの往復切符を頼むと６５歳以上は往復８ドルになりました。割引率は分かりませんがおトクだったようです。

    さて、ここからが大変！アメリカの駅は改札がなく列車まで行くのは自由です。目的の列車は10:50発の予定。掲示板にはどのトラック（＝プラットホーム）か表示がありません。まもなく10:50の近郊列車３番トラックと表示されたので慌ててそこに行き乗り込む前に駅員に目的の駅に行くかと聞くと応えはNO。目指す列車が10:50にあるはずだとこちらが言うと、分からないが駅のアナウンスを聞けと言います。仕方なしに戻って、掲示板を見るも何の表示もなし。列車は遅れている。駅のアナウンスはモヤッとして聞き取りにくい。時間はとっくに過ぎている。焦っているとようやく掲示板に予定した列車の表示が出て１０番トラックから５分後に出る様子。急いで１０番に行くも長い車列の乗車できる車両はずっと先の方。何とか乗り込むことはできたものの、疑問点が私の頭にはありすぎて.....。

    目的地で降りた時に、帰りはホームが反対側になることを確認しました。友達と別れた後、ホームで待っていると同じ列車に乗る人が集まってきて同様に列車を待っていました。時間が来ても列車は来ないまま皆は辛抱強く待ち続け、やっと列車が近づいた時、突然皆が橋を渡って反対側のホーム目掛けて階段を駆け上がっていくではありませんか。私も勿論必死で皆について行きました。結局、帰りの列車も行きと同じホームにやってきたのです。

    列車内での切符チェックもない呑気な郊外列車でしたが、時間も乗るホームもいい加減な印象。文句を言う人もなく多分こんな感じで何十年も走り続けているボストンの近郊列車。ひどく疲れる1日でした。

    I went to see my friend who lives in the suburbs of Boston by using a commuter rail. There was an idea to rent a car in my mind but I decided not to because I felt I should save my money for just visiting my friend and returning to Boston.

    South Station is the biggest station where Amtrak departs and leaves, and it is also a station of the MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority). Inside the premises, I saw many people who were pulling their suitcases, buying food and drinks at the food stand, and it was so lively. Ticket window of commuter rail was next to Amtrak, and I asked for a return ticket. It was $8.00 for seniors.

    Now, I was kind of in a panic after this. Previously I had checked that the departure time of the commuter rail which I was supposed to get on was 10:50 a.m., but there was no track information on the board. However, soon track 3 was indicated for the train which was scheduled to depart at 10:50. I rushed to the train and just asked the conductor who was standing outside before getting on the train if it would be stopping at XX, he said NO and said the different destination. He only knew that his train departed at 10:50 and it didn't stop at my station. He said that I should listen to the announcement about the expected train in the station. The expected train was delayed 30 min, and finally I could get on the train at track 10.

    When I got off the train, I checked for the track which I was supposed to get on for my way back to Boston. After I said goodbye to my friend, I was waiting for the train on the track. A few people were waiting for the same train on the same track as I was, but the train didn't come on time. It was delayed again, and after a while, people suddenly started running toward the other track, going up the stairs. It seemed the train was coming on the same track as I got off a few hours ago. Of course I also ran to the other track to get the train.

    There was no ticket checking in the train car and it was so generous, but I thought that the commuter rail in this area is rather sloppy in terms of keeping time and track. I was so exhausted the whole day.

    ART(American Repertory theater)でロック・オペラのエビータ（EVITA)を観ました。数十年前に日本で日本人による公演を観ましたが、Shakespeare Thatre Companyによる今回の上演を知って興味津々、観たいと思いました。

    さて、劇場内に入ると暗いステージにエビータを象徴する白いドレスが中央に吊り下がり、舞台一面に覆われた白い花に衝撃を受けました。ブロードウェイなどの商業演劇の劇場と違い、ここはハーバード大学が持つ５００席ぐらいのプロの演劇劇場で、どんな展開を見せるのかドキドキするようなステージ効果です。席で待っているとオーケストラピットでの楽器の準備も次第に賑やかになり、場内アナウンスがスペイン語で始まりました。アルゼンチンが舞台のエビータならではの演出効果なのでしょう。

    ここでは詳しく書けませんが、休憩を挟んで２時間半のステージは圧巻でした。今回のエビータ役は意図的に黒人の方になっていたようですが、この日は代役のラテン系の方、彼女もソロで歌う男性陣も歌が上手い！アンサンブルのダンスも見事！アーチ型のシンプルな大道具の転換と中央の迫り（せり）と照明も上手に使われていました。終わった時の観客のスタンディングオベーションは納得いくものでした。

    久しぶりのARTのステージには圧倒されましたが、同時にここにはある種のメッセージがあったことも事実です。それは劇場の壁に掛かっていたEVITAの看板横に大きく"Black Lives Matter"と書いてあったこと。それから手洗いは"All Genders"と書かれていて男女共用になっていたこと。不愉快極まりないです！私はAll Gendersトイレは絶対に困ると思っています。日本もこの傾向にあるようですが嘆かわしい限りです。

    I went to see the rock opera "EVITA" at ART (American Repertory Theatre). I watched it by a Japanese theatrical company in Japan decades ago, but I was just curious about watching it performed by ART.
Well, when I entered the stage hall, I saw a white dress hanging from the center ceiling on the stage which was obviously a symbol of Evita and white flowers completely covered the stage. It prefaced the performance that was about to begin and gave a strong impact. Loeb Drama Theatre which is ART's home base is not a very big theatre hall such as the theatre in NY Broadway, and it is affiliated with Harvard University.

    The more people come to take their sheets, the louder the noise became in the orchestra pit. When the audience lights went off, the Spanish announcement started first which seemed like a stage effect because EVITA is Argentinian.

    The two and half hour performance including intermission was overwhelming. The original casting of Evita, the main character, was a black woman but a latino woman was the swing on this day. She and other members who sang solo parts were so good, the dancing by the ensemble was amazing, arch shaped large props and the stage elevator were effectively used and stage lights were also excellent. When the show was over, the audience gave a standing ovation and I had the same rating for this performance.

    I had not watched an ART performance in a long time, and it was really amazing and powerful. On the other hand I also felt that they gave us a certain message. I saw a big sign which said "Black Lives Matter '', and "All Genders" was written outside the restroom. As for the restroom, I felt very uncomfortable with this. I don't like this "all genders' restroom" at all. Japan is changing in the same way, and that is upsetting to me.

    南駅（South Station）の近くにボストン子供博物館があります。海沿いの古い倉庫のような建物を子供達の年齢に合わせて体験しながら遊んだり学んだりできる施設にしたもので全米にはこうした施設が３００以上あるらしく、その中でも２番目に古いそうです。

    夏休みの土曜日ということもあって中は子供連れの家族でごった返していました。Kid Powerと書かれたコーナーでは空気圧など力で動く様々な遊びに子供も大人もチャレンジ。大きなシャボン玉や水遊びに夢中になる子供たち。木の板を組み立ててる兄弟。影絵で遊ぶ親子などなど。一番歓声が上がっていたのは３階まである"Climb"と称する狭い通路を登ったり降りたりする遊び。

    ボストンはまた６０年以上に渡って京都と姉妹都市ですが、関係者の尽力で京都の古い町屋を大工さんを現地から呼んでそのままこの子供博物館に移しました。高さの制限で屋根はありませんが２階建ての立派な家屋です。通常公開していますが、この日は残念ながら中は見ることができませんでした。以前は都内の電車を再現したり、餅つきなど日本の行事を体験したり、いろいろな文化紹介をしていましたが、経費もかかることで難しくなっているのかもしれません。

　久しぶりに子供博物館へ行ってみて、やはり老朽化が見えましたが、全てに子供達が遊びながら学べる工夫がしてあることに改めて感心しました。大人一人で子供博物館へ行くというのも珍しいですが、子供達が一心に遊んでいるのを見て楽しかったです。

    There is a Boston Children's Museum near the South Station. It is the facility for the children to play and learn through their experience upon their age and I heard the building was originally an old storage house by the sea and renovated as the facility for the kids several decades ago. According to the web information, there are over 300 facilities like this children's museum in the US and Boston Children's Museum is the second oldest one.

    I guess maybe because it was Saturday during the summer holidays, it was crowded with families. At the corner sign of "Kid Power", Kids and even adults played with the tools which reflected their power, one of the brothers was assembling small wooden boards, a boy and his mother were playing with shadows, etc. Many kids were playing and shouting with joy on the climbing structure which was as high as the level of three stories.

    We know that Boston and Kyoto have had a good relationship as Sister Cities for several decades. City of Boston received a gift of a traditional Japanese house (Kyo no Machiya) from the city of Kyoto in 1979 and it was exhibited in the Boston Children's Museum. Usually it is open to the public, but unfortunately it was closed on my visiting day.

    It had been a really long time since my last visit, and I realized that the museum was aging in many parts but I was amazed that they all created tools which kids can play with pleasantly and think through.

    It might be rare that adults like me visit the Children's Museum alone, but I enjoyed watching the kids being completely absorbed in their playing in the museum.

    ある人と待ち合わせの場所がハーバード美術館だったので行ってみました。以前はフォッグ美術館（Fogg Museum）として中世から現代の西洋絵画、彫刻などの展示の美術館でしたが暫く工事で閉館になっていました。改装が終わって中に入ると以前とは全く違うのでびっくり。聞くと、長期の閉館はハーバードの三つの美術館を一つに統合した拡張工事のためであったとのこと。

    正面の外観は建築当初のままですが、実は建物はのべ６階、ガラス屋根になるなど大きく改修されていました。中の展示も古代から現代、ヨーロッパ、北アメリカ、中東、南アジアから東アジアの所蔵物が２５万点にも及ぶとのこと。私たちにも馴染みの有名な絵画や彫刻が数多くゆっくり鑑賞できます。しかも、な、何とこの美術館の入場はつい先月から無料になりました！！

    ボストンはボストン美術館が有名で観光客も必ず訪れる所ですが、このハーバード美術館はお勧めスポットです。美術館の隣は「カーペンター視覚芸術センター」でフランスの巨匠ル・コルビュジエの建築物です。

    １０時の開館と同時に中へ入って話しをした後、一人残って美術館の作品を鑑賞し、疲れたので大学の構内のベンチでしばらく休んでいると、学生が引率する観光の集団がやってきたり、家族連れが写真を撮ったりしていきます。気温はそれなりに上がっているのでしょうが、湿度が低く緑に囲まれてのんびりした時間の中では日本の猛暑が嘘のようでした。

    Since I had an appointment and the meeting place was at HAM (Harvard Art Museums), I went there. It used to be the Fogg Museum which had many collections of Western paintings, sculptures from medieval to modern, but it was closed for a long time because of construction. When I entered the museum after the construction, I was surprised because the inside of the building was completely different from before. I knew then that the new one combined three museums in Harvard (the Fogg museum, Busch-Reisinger Museum and Arthur M. Sackler Museum).     

    The appearance of the new museum is the same as before but in fact, it became a six story building with a glass roof. According to the flyer, the number of the exhibition is over 250000 including many familiar great painters and sculptors works and it became free admission since last June!

    Museum of Fine Arts, Boston is famous for the tourists, but the Harvard Museums is a place which you should visit. The building next to the Museum is Carpenter Center for Visual Arts, which is the only building in North America designed by Swiss-born architect Le Corbusier.

    I went to the HAM at 10 a.m. for the meeting, then I left alone to look around the museum. When I was resting at the bench in the yard, a tour group lead by a Harvard student passed by or some family group came and took photos for the kids near me. I felt really relaxed in the quiet atmosphere surrounded by green, even though the temperature must have been high.

    駅前のもんぜん市でひまわりを買って床の間に飾りました。梅雨が明けない鬱陶しいお天気で体も疲れ気味ですが、「元気だせ〜っ！」と言わんばかりにカアッと開いた黄色い花と勢いのある葉っぱは、見ているだけで力がもらえそうです。

    I bought sunflowers at the market in the station which opens in the morning every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. I put them in the vase and placed them in the alcove of the guest room. It is still in the rainy season which makes me feel dull and tired, but these bright yellow sunflowers and fresh leaves seem to have a lot of energy and they are cheering me up. I like sunflowers. I feel like I am energized by them.

    友人のミュージカル公演が夕方からだったので、都内の友人宅に泊めてもらって久しぶりに夜遅く（明け方？）まで話し込んだ翌日は、一人西浅草の台所道具街で有名な「かっぱ橋」へ出かけました。

    特定の店を決めていたわけではなく、とある小さな竹製品の店に入ると、私の欲しかったものがあったので、奥さんに色々聞きながら他の商品も見せてもらっていたらご主人が外から帰ってこられ、さらに詳しく似た製品の微妙な違いなどを下町の歯切れのいい優しく丁寧な江戸弁で説明してくださいました。内容は勿論有り難かったのですが、耳に温かく入る江戸弁の語り口が何とも嬉しく聞き惚れました。

    ほかにお客さんもいなかったので、聞かれるままに私が関西から来ていること、多賀大社という神社のそばの古民家でカフェをしていること、伊勢神宮と多賀大社の関係など話すのを、ご夫婦は興味深く聞いてくださいました。

    そして、何回か「ちょっと余計なことかもしれませんが」と言い置いて、私のために情報を教えてくださいました。その情報の一つは河童橋界隈を循環している１００円で乗れるバスがあることで、帰りはそれで上野駅近くまで行って、そこから東京駅に出て新幹線に乗りました。

    河童橋での思いがけない下町の人情が今回の最高のお土産になりました。

    I went to my friend's musical play in Urawa which was forty minutes from Tokyo station by train. Since it started in the evening, I stayed over at my other friend's house in Tokyo. There, we talked a lot with each other until late at night. The next day, I went to Kappa-bashi in west Asakusa which is famous for the shops of kitchen tools.

    I randomly entered a small shop which was selling things made from bamboo. There, I found things which I was seeking and while I was looking around for other tools and asking some questions to the owner's wife, the owner came back from outside. He kindly explained about the difference between the thing which I took and another similar one. I appreciated his detailed explanation, and I was also very happy to hear him speak. He spoke in a very nice Tokyo dialect which was used in downtown Tokyo. 

    A couple of shop owners were very kind and since they asked about me, I told them that I was from Kansai (Western part of Japan), I run a cafe near Taga Shrine, and the relation between Taga Shrine and Ise Shrine.

    The owner gave me some information, and one of them was about the transportation from Kappabashi to Ueno Station. He told me about the bus service which is running in that area and I can take that bus from the nearby bus stop to the bus stop which is near the Ueno Station with 100 yen. It was very useful and I just followed his advice. I reached Ueno Station and took Tokyo Station by train to get Shinkansen.

    It was a nice visit to Kappabashi for me and I could feel the warmth of the people.

    朝早く自転車を走らせた時の爽快感は、昼近くの気温の上昇と湿気で真夏日を思わせる気だるさに変わっていました。自転車に乗りながら聞こえてきたのは今年初めての蝉の声。梅雨明けはまだですが、暑い１日でした。

    昨夜見た美しい満月。今年もA先生からいただいた龍潭寺木槿の清楚な白。端から端まで２メートルもある巣の中心の見事な黄金蜘蛛（こがねぐも）。７月初めの清々しく生き生きとした風景に圧倒されます。

    Today, I felt so good when I rode my bicycle in the early morning, but it turned hot and humid at noon like summer and I felt so tired. It was the first time I heard the sound of cicadas this year when I was on the bicycle. Although the rainy season is not over yet, it was a really hot day.

    The full moon I saw last night was so beautiful. The MUKUGE (hibiscus syriacus) which was from Mr. A was pure white. Koganegumo (Argiope amoena) in a big spider web in the backyard looked greatly dignified. They look so fresh and lively in early July and I am amazed by them.
