郊外に住む友人のお宅で仲間とおしゃべりしようということで、久しぶりにレンタカーをしました。事前にオンラインで予約しておいたので車の引き渡しは訳なくできましたが、小さめの車を予約しておいたのに、今回もそれより大きい車を当てがわれ正直ありがた迷惑でしたが、それよりもエンジンがボタンで掛かるのは分かるにしても、ギアが脇ではなく前のハンドルのそばのボタンを回すようになっていて乗った時に「なにこれ？！」と悲鳴をあげたくなるぐらい戸惑いました。兎に角、エンジン、ブレーキ、アクセルだけ分かれば運転はできるので、シートの位置を動かす操作だけ教えてもらってスタートしました。動き出せば別にどうということはなかったのですが、音楽を聴きたいと思ってボタンをあちこち押しても聞こえず。エアコンだけはかかったのでまあまあ快適に４０分ほどで目的地まで辿りつけました。
さて、伺ったお宅は築１００年ぐらいの古い家を改修し、台所もテラスも明るく素敵になり、且つアメリカならではの丁寧に細工された部分と日本から持ち込まれた古い家具や食器がご本人のセンスの良さでため息が出るほど素敵に見せられていました。昔の仕事から離れ、皆それぞれ打ち込むものを持ちつつ日本との繋がりの中で時に苦闘しつつも暮らす仲間との会話はあっという間でした。チーズとフランスパン、スープ、もう一人の友達が焼いて持ってきてくれたベリークランブルというブルーベリーと桃のデザートにアイスクリームが添えられて美味しかったです。
ドライブウェイにテスラが置かれていたのですが、見せてもらっておけばよかったと後で残念に思いました。
I rented a car after a long time because I wanted visit my friend's house in the suburbs to get together with members who already retired but they used to teach Japanese in Boston. Since I requested a car online beforehand, I could get the car smoothly although the size of the car was bigger than I expected. I was a bit confused because the layout and the way of driving were different from the car which I used to drive. The gear was not located beside the seat but near the steering wheel and it was a small lever. Anyhow I started and I didn't have any problem driving and reached my friend's house.
The house I visited was built 100 years ago and it was remodeled partially. The kitchen became bright and modern and led to the terrace. Since it was an American old house, there were many hand-made parts which were so nice and my friend brought some old furniture and ceramics from Japan. They were nicely decorated in the house and I love them all.
All members gathered there were already retired and each one found other things to get immersed in now. The host served baguette & cheese and soup,and another friend brought berry crumble which she baked. They were so good!
It was a really nice gathering. I saw a Tesla parked in the driveway and it was my friend's. I should have asked her to show the inside of it to satisfy my curiosity. That was the only thing I regret.
